All Saints
Old Buckenham, Norfolk
All Saints is an ancient church with a fully thatched roof and full height octagonal tower, some Norman and medieval features, central to the village of Old Buckenham.
From the outside St Mary's looks rather odd because the tower is at the east end, where the chancel should be.
Attleborough, Norfolk
In fact the tower was once the central part of a cruciform building, but the chancel was demolished at the time of the Reformation. The base of the tower is Norman, but much of the rest of the church dates from the 14th century.
The spacious interior is dominated by a wonderful late 15th century screen that stretches the entire width of the church. It is one of Norfolk's best, but has had a chequered history, having been repainted in the 16th and 17th centuries, nearly sold to an antiques dealer in the 19th century, and consigned to the back of the church until 1931.
Other items of interest in the church include an intriguing metalwork lectern and some wall paintings above the screen.
