It was founded in 1091 by Peter des Valoines, a nephew of William the Conqueror.

The church sits among some of the most complete and impressive monastic ruins in Norfolk. It still has a splendid 13th century west front, and displays the former rood screen with medieval saints overpainted with Protestant texts.

The earlier Norman arches are richly decorated with zig zag and billet mouldings, while at the western end the arches are pointed and ribbed in the Early English style.
