There may have been a church here as early as Saxon times, and there are traces of ancient stonework in the north aisle.

That building was replaced by a Norman one, and again, clear signs of that structure can be seen, but most of the church is 14th century, with additions in the 15th century. There were restorations and repairs in 1855, 1891, and 1927. The delicate screen dates from the 1891 renovation, and was designed by architect JL Pearson.

There are no pews in the church, and the nave is often cleared of its chairs so as to become as space for concerts, performances, and an annual art show that raises funds for the church.

Its greatest treasure is a large Flemish tapestry that hangs on the north wall. This dates from about 1510 and shows Christ's entry into Jerusalem. It has been in the church since 1737, and was restored in 1999.
