Topped by the stump of a spire that was never built, the tower of Shepton Mallet church dates from around 1380, much earlier than most of the renowned Somerset towers.

The church's crowning glory is inside, high above the narrow nave. An amazing oak wagon vault consists of 350 separate panels, each with a different design and separated by superb bosses. Carved angels along each side complete this masterpiece, which dates from the late 15th century.
