An exuberant Romanesque doorway and narrow windows with zigzag carving would have made the tower an outstanding building in its own right, but around 1220, some 50 years after it was completed, it was joined by an Early English church, with steeply pitched roof and simple, slender lancet windows.

The resulting composite early medieval building is a delight, both inside and out.
