Its history goes back considerably further: it stands on the site of a Roman basilica, and a Roman arch is still in place beneath the Saxon one.

The lower part of the tower is also Saxon. It is topped with a distinctive shingled broach spire.

The east window is remarkable for its fine group of stepped lancets with five lights, Early English windows usually have only three.
