St George
Donnington, Sussex
A haven betwixt a roman walled city, the sea and open countryside.
Imagine a time when this coastal parish and nearby Pagham Harbour (now a wetland nature reserve) was busy with maritime trade and it is easy to see why this should have been the largest church in the area.
Sidlesham, Sussex
There was a church on the site in Saxon times. The present one dates from the early 13th century but is a lighter and airier building than most churches of its day. The battlemented tower and the minstrels' gallery are 15th century.
The church's interior would have been painted, and fragments of pigment can still be seen on the stonework. There is also a 'mass dial', cut into a stone outside the south door to indicate service times.
