St John the Baptist
Newcastle, Tyne & Wear
St John's is one of the oldest churches in the city, open daily and welcomes visitors from all over the world.
This Cathedral is one of the finest works of Augustus Welby Pugin, designer of the Houses of Parliament, and has some of the most impressive stained glass windows and tile work in the north of England.
Newcastle, Tyne & Wear
This Catholic Cathedral was built in the early 19th century from the halfpenny subscriptions of the poorest people of Tyneside. It was designed by AWN Pugin, the designer of the Palace of Westminster, in the medieval style made popular by him in the Victorian Neo-Gothic Revival.<
It has been refurbished, to include a new tiled floor, some modern stained glass windows and a brand new pipe organ, one of the finest instruments in the country. In the grounds of the Cathedral is the Cardinal Hume Memorial Garden, opened by HM The Queen to commemorate the life and work of one of Tyneside's greatest sons Basil Hume, Archbishop of Westminster.
The Cathedral precinct, including its Cloister Cafe and Bookshop, is an oasis of peace in the busy city of Newcastle.
