Many visitors come to see the monuments, including those of the Stourton family, who had been established here for many generations before Henry Hoare I bought the property, in 1717, and set about replacing the medieval house to create the Stourhead that we know today. His son, also Henry (1705'85), developed the remarkable landscaped grounds. There are monuments to both men, and to other Hoare family members.

The church has kept parts of its 14th century work, though there was a Victorian reconstruction, during which it acquired another aisle, a vestry and a clock.
