Croome D Abitot, Worcestershire
Discover this glorious early Gothic Revival chapel, sat alongside the National Trust house and landscape of Croome Park, laid out by Capability Brown.
As well as its cathedral Chester has at least six ancient churches, several of them now no longer serving as churches.
Besford, Worcestershire
Two, St Peter's (of many ages and possibly with Roman masonry in its fabric) and St John's are of particular interest, and are the joint parish churches of Chester.
Inside the theme is wood: from the roof, to the pews, pulpit and altar rails; from the walls, panelled using old pews, to the beautiful, original medieval rood loft. Wood features too in one of the monuments; that to Richard Harwell of Besford Court, who died in 1576 aged 15. His alabaster effigy is surrounded by a wooden lattice.
And there is a painted wooden triptych in the nave. It dates from the end of the 16th century, and its panels shows scenes that are reminders of the passage of time and the inevitability of death.
