St John the Baptist
Tuebrook, Liverpool, Merseyside
The parish church of St John the Baptist, one of the most impressive of Liverpool's suburban churches, was built between 1868 and 1870 in an unusual mixtures of style, but with a decidedly florid twist.
Tuebrook, Lancashire
The exterior is in pale sandstone, which is irregularly banded in red sandstone, while the richly coloured interior has been described by architecture historian Nikolaus Pevsner as '...one of the finest examples of Victorian polychromy.'
Most striking are the walls and beautiful arched Gothic roofs, which are all ornately stencilled, and there are colourfully painted panels and screens by CE Kempe, a Victorian artist best known for his stained glass designs in jewel tones. Here, some of the windows are by the Pre Raphaelites William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones.
St John's is one of Liverpool's leading churches in the Anglo Catholic movement, with its emphasis on the Catholic heritage of decorative embellishment, faith and liturgical practice. That said, the intended use of an early 16th century altarpiece from Antwerp was rejected by the Bishop of Chester for being too 'Popish.'
