Late Victorian imposing Gothic revival church. The main benefactor William Cochrane was a mining engineer but donations received from the working men and women of the parish recorded in the inscription on the two pillars at the head of the nave. Fine east window of coloured glass unusual depiction of Jesus receiving young child into the company of saints in memory of 'Cochrane child who had died tragically'. Also fine stained glass in west window. Notable chancel screen and choir stalls carved by well known tyneside wood carver Ralph Hedley; hidden on the screen are mice, toads snails and a sea horse. Wooden memorial cross above screen dedicated 1951 in memory of former Vicar William Studdert Kennedy, brother of famous World War I vicar Woodbine Willie. Milennium Embroidery in south porch with 200 contributions from congregation ranging from a single stitch to a number of pieces. Fine ring of 10 bells in tower. Outside is a garden of remembrance with seating and a crucifix.
