The church was completed around 1181, with some rebuilding work was done in 1853.

Acton Burnell Castle was the home of Robert Burnell, a close associate of Edward I who became Lord Chancellor and Bishop of Bath and Wells.

Generally agreed to be one of the finest churches in Lincolnshire, St Helen's was already in the front rank before the Victorian architect GF Bodley added a sumptuous chancel, with painted vault and lavishly gilded reredos, in his late 19th century restoration.

St Giles, situated in the tiniest of hamlets, is the birthplace of Stephen Langton, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1207-1228 and a central figure in the drafting and signing of Magna Carta in 1215 at Runnymede.

The chapel is in an idyllic position, with the big house on one side and a lake on the other. It is a building entirely in the Gothic style, but was actually built during the 17th century Commonwealth.

The church was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield and built between 1890 and 1892.
