The church of St Mary the Virgin is located in the heart of the large village of Wargrave on Thames, and is beautifully situated beside Mill Green.

A beautiful Victorian church with a stunning chancel designed by the renowned architect William Butterfield (who designed Keble College, Oxford) under the initiative of the rector John Horatio Nelson, nephew of Admiral Nelson.

St Mary’s church gleams a golden hue in the setting sunlight which takes your breath away, even without its once high spire it dominates the village scape and stands out above everything else in the Steeple Ashton vale.

A long flight of steps leading up to it from the town square gives great presence to this distinguished looking limestone building whose walls are topped with a parapet of intricately pierced stonework.

It seems odd to us, in an age where it is accepted that the super rich spend all their money on themselves, that it was not at all unusual for wealthy medieval people to spend some of their own fortunes on such things as churches.
