A vibrant church in the heart of Southsea

Grade II listed church with interesting architectural features and artistic decoration.

The present church was built in 1881 on the site of a chapel, Capel Mair, which dated from Norman times.

St John the Baptist was built in 1914 as a Mission church so that parishioners could avoid the walk into Ringwood and was given the status of chapel of ease.

A church building dedicated to local Saint Tysul, who was related to St David, and after whom the town Llandysul is named; Llan means 'church of' or 'sacred place'.

On the 6th October 2019 our chapel celebrates 150 years continuous worship.

The church stands at the centre of the village where modern houses occupy the sites of farmyards and are thus cheek by jowl with ancient farmhouses.

The present church at South Bersted dates back to 1405, when it was consecrated and dedicated by the Bishop Reade of Chichester before a large congregation.
