‘Few churches in South Yorkshire contain more that may delay and interest the curious inquirer than this country chapel’. so the great historian Joseph Hunter wrote in 1831.

We are the only church in the middle of a housing estate.

Prestwich is not mentioned in the Domesday Book but there is evidence of a church on the site from at least 1200.

Welcome to this ancient parish church, extensively renovated and adorned by 2nd Viscount Halifax, who is buried here. The interior is by Bodley, and has many interesting features.

St Nicholas has been at the centre of the community of Thorne for around 1000 years, remains found in the area show that Thorne became a settlement in Anglo Saxon times.

Wombwell, mentioned in the Doomsday Survey of 1086 as Wambella, increased its population dramatically in the 19th century with the development of coal mines and other industries.

Marr featured in the Domesday survey of 1086. Seventy Roman coins were recently found in the area which provide evidence of the boundary line which Marr formed at the Roman Rickneild Street.

The present church is the third built in the village. An old ruined chapel, thought to have been sited near Pule Hill, was recorded in 1650.

Midhopestones is a hamlet, high in the Pennines north west of Sheffield, St James is a tiny rugged church, surrounded by a picturesque graveyard.
