Holy Trinity
Gwersyllt, Wrexham
Holy Trinity is a Victorian building set in a large churchyard, located on the edge of Wrexham town.
Unusual and interesting Victorian church on an ancient site in a beautiful rural setting.
Minera, Wrexham
The present building dates from 1866 and is the third on an ancient site being mentioned on a map dating from 1577. Approaching the building through the arch of the yew trees the first thing you notice is the unusual stonework. Also unusual is the shape of the building, in the shape of a cross with the tower joined to the southern arm by a short passage.
Enter the church by the main door in the base of the tower, noting the height above sea level carved into the door step, 838ft.4inches, and pass through the folding doors into the main body of the church. Here you realise the significance of the cross shape, everything is in close proximity and looking up you see the magnificent timber work with a brass chandelier in the centre.
Above the altar is an interesting four panel stained glass window depicting three scenes from the life of Christ plus the parable of the Good Samaritan. To the north is another stained glass window with the central panel depicting Christ as the Good Shepherd and two scenes of healing. To the west is the organ in its loft, installed in 1913, converted to electricity in the 1930s and still maintained by the same company. Also in the same arm of the cross are some of the original box pews, believed to have been recycled from the earlier building on the site.
There is an extensive churchyard, which is a haven for wildlife, with 19th century headstones near the church and more modern ones in the area towards the west.
The interior was re-ordered in 2016 when some of the fixed pews were removed to make space for a toilet with washbasin and baby changing facility, a small kitchen and a storage room. There is an easy access ramp and apart from in the chancel the floor is all on one level.
You can find a full description of the technical details of the building on the Cadw website, reference number 19715.
