St Matthew
Bestwood, Nottinghamshire
The church was designed by Vernon Royle, who was much influenced by Sir Basil Spence’s three churches in Coventry.
Opened in 1905, the church is famous for its 1966 carvings at the top of the pillars by the sculptor Witold Gracjan Kawalec, representing Work, Peace, Mercy, Hope, Life, Guidance, Humility, Justice, Grace and Music.
Basford, Nottinghamshire
The stone church was built as a chapel of ease to St Leodegarius, Basford, and has an unfinished appearance as there was never enough money to fund a chancel. The notable sculptures were added to the church in the 1960's when a considerable effort was made to raise money to complete the building and the interior was reordered.
