Before the first recorded reference to a church here in AD 1176, it is possible that a simple wood church existed on the same site, made from Sherwood oak. This was replaced by a simple stone building and parts of the present church date from before the Conquest. The first parish register is dated 1544 and the church itself has an interesting history and has undergone many alterations over the centuries.
