St Michael Cornhill
City of London, Greater London
The church lies over the remains of the Basilica, the northern most part of the great Roman Forum built in the first century AD.
This tucked away church, rebuilt in the 18th century, is internationally known for its astonishing set of windows by the 20th century Russian born artist Marc Chagall, better known for his paintings and for his dramatic cathedral glass in France and at Chichester.
Tudeley, Kent
Inside Tudeley church, plain walls and floor ensure that all attention is on the wonderful colours of Chagall's windows: blues and purples on the north side, with yellows and oranges taking the full impact of the sun on the south.
The east window makes the biggest impact: installed in 1967 to commemorate a young woman who drowned in a sailing accident in 1963. The remaining windows were completed in 1985, just before the artist's death at the age of 97, making this the only church in England with a complete set of Chagall windows.
