St Mary the Virgin

The fascinating ancillary buildings, including Bede House, the college and the school are all connected with Archbishop Chichele (1364-1433), who was born here.

The church was built in the 13th century and then enlarged in the 14th century.

It is large with a magnificent town spire, rebuilt after a fire in 1631. At its base is sculpture close in style to that at Westminster Abbey c1220-80.

Internally a sort of double nave, one leading to the chancel the other to a Lady Chapel from the medieval period. It also has misericords and brasses.

The stained glass windows are late 19th century by Clayton & Bell, Morris & Co, and Kempe. Sir Ninian Comper also worked here.
