St John the Evangelist
Crosby on Eden, Cumbria
Built to the architect Billings unique design in 1854, our church has many beautiful features.
This ‘hidden gem’ is the earliest known surviving example of a small English parish church designed by ‘God’s Architect’ Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin.
Warwick Bridge, Cumbria
The church retains all of its original elaborate architectural features, fittings and furniture, and most of its extensive painted decoration.
In 2016 an essential programme of work was undertaken to secure the building, with essential repairs to the roof, drainage system, plasterwork, bell tower and facing. Parishioners now aim to restore the decorative interior to the full glory of Pugin’s design and are inviting schools and visitors to experience the building, see its artefacts and learn about the rich local history.
