St Leodegarius
Basford, Nottinghamshire
Robert de Basford or de Ashby founded a Cistercian priory at Catesby in c1175 and endowed it partly with income from Basford, it is one of only four churches in England dedicated to St Leodegarius.
The church was built to cater for the rapidly growing needs of the village of Carrington which came into being after 1825.
The appropriately named William Surplice was the architect and builder, although Ichabod Wright, another wonderful name, appeared to influence the design. Wright’s friend Archdeacon Wilkins wrote, 'the church which is a gothic structure of the early English and Decorated style was principally designed by Mr Wright'.
The building has undergone considerable alteration over the years, the latest in 2009 to modernise and reorder.
