Salem Baptist Chapel dates from 1765.
Longford, West Midlands
The present chapel was built in 1872 and is locally listed as a place of historical significance to Longford. The chapel remains much as it would have been in Victorian times, including its horseshoe shaped balcony. The chapel closed after Salem Baptist amalgamated with Longford Baptist church in 2012, and was empty for several years before House of Empowerment located their church here.
House of Empowerment was registered as a charity in August 2004. It is now one of the larger churches in Coventry, with a wide mix of ethnic groups. Having acquired the former Baptist Chapel in 2016, significant repairs are being undertaken.
The chapel is impressive in size, being on three floors. It seats up to 864 people upstairs in the main auditorium. There is also substantial space on the ground floor/basement where community activities take place, served by a community kitchen. There is an organ, though services today are accompanied by modern musical equipment.
It is situated in the Coventry Canal Conservation Area, in Lady Lane, Longford. The Chapel is close to the canal which can be accessed at the end of Lady Lane. The church has an extensive graveyard which served the Baptist Chapel for many years.

Combining the evocative ruins of the bombed Cathedral Church of St Michael with the magnificent ‘casket of jewels’ designed by Sir Basil Spence, and voted the nation’s favourite 20th century building, Coventry Cathedral is a truly inspirational place to visit.
