St Peter

Kineton is a vibrant growing village with a history stretching back to Saxon times. It was the setting for the Battle of Edgehill in 1642. The grade II* listed St Peter’s church is located within the centre of Kineton conservation area in a prominent setting at a major road junction. A full view of the south side of the church can be seen from the main Warwick Road.

The current building was erected in the late 13th century and reconsecrated by the Bishop of Worcester, Walter Maydenston, July 1315. There has been considerable structural change since then, including a radical remodelling of the nave. Transepts were added between 1755 and 1775 by architect Sanderson Miller and a new gallery installed. Only the chancel east window survived the remodelling.

In the 1880s John Belcher led further remodelling and, in 1897, an organ loft and vestry were added. Now the west tower and doorway is the only surviving section of the church dating from the late 13th century. The tower has a bell chamber with eight bells and an 1885 clock. Pinnacles and battlements were added in the 19th century. There are eight stained glass windows. The organ is one of six unmodified Brindley and Foster organ in the UK. Other aspects of high significance include ledger stones, rood screen and a late 14th century recumbent effigy of a priest and a 16th century chest.

St Peter’s is on the ‘at risk’ register, largely because it is constructed with soft iron stone.
