Cuckfield, Sussex
Holy Trinity Cuckfield gradually evolved between the 12th and 15th centuries from the original small stone church, and the story can be read in the changing architecture of the building. It has an unusual barrel roof enclosing the nave, aisles and chancel and obliterating the earlier clerestory windows. It is built of Wealden sandstone with a Horsham stone roof and the tower is surmounted by an imposing shingle clad spire. In the middle of the 19th century the church was reordered by Bodley and decorated by Kempe, including the painting of both the chancel and nave ceilings.
The stained glass windows are by Hardman, Ward and Hughes, Clayton and Bell and Kempe and there are several other Kempe artefacts in both the church and the churchyard. There are many memorials including works by Adey, Flaxman and Westmacott. In 2012 the church was further reordered for 21st century worship by Lee Evans, moving the chancel screen by Bodley to the tower, extending the chancel as a dais for a nave alter, installing underfloor heating under a stone floor and furnishing with oak seating, choir stalls and nave altar.
