A masterpiece of Gothic Revival, designed by EW Pugin.

Designed by Philip Hardwicke and completed in 1823, the design is based in St Paul's in Covent Garden, with many internal design features referencing our patron St John the Evangelist.

A thousand year old wall carving, a 17th century Fox’s Book of Martyrs hidden within its walls, 14th century Crusader crosses and a 15th century skull from the the War of the Roses.

‘Few churches in South Yorkshire contain more that may delay and interest the curious inquirer than this country chapel’. so the great historian Joseph Hunter wrote in 1831.

The church is a ‘noble edifice in the early English style of Gothic architecture’from which the view is beautiful, over Worsbrough reservoir to Wortley, Stainborough Park and Worsbrough Park.
