Wortley is a small village between Sheffield and Huddersfield, and the imposing parish church in the centre of the village serves what is essentially a rural community.

Visit the church and learn about Thomas Retford, who courageously gave his life for opposing the king’s destruction of the monasteries.

The church started near the railway station, when Rugby was an expanding railway engineering town.

Wombwell, mentioned in the Doomsday Survey of 1086 as Wambella, increased its population dramatically in the 19th century with the development of coal mines and other industries.

The church is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. A church of some kind has stood here on this site for over 1,000 years.
