This pretty country village is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ‘Brodesworde’.

This Grade II listed church sits amongst mature trees with some historic gravestones, and as a result of a fire in 1985 the interior was reordered and transformed.

St Mary’s has in itself a short history, compared with other churches in the area.

Great Houghton is part of the Barnsley Methodist Circuit.

This Grade I Norman church has some stones used in its construction which indicate an earlier Saxon church on this site.

‘Few churches in South Yorkshire contain more that may delay and interest the curious inquirer than this country chapel’. so the great historian Joseph Hunter wrote in 1831.

Prestwich is not mentioned in the Domesday Book but there is evidence of a church on the site from at least 1200.

Welcome to this ancient parish church, extensively renovated and adorned by 2nd Viscount Halifax, who is buried here. The interior is by Bodley, and has many interesting features.

St Nicholas has been at the centre of the community of Thorne for around 1000 years, remains found in the area show that Thorne became a settlement in Anglo Saxon times.

The church was built by the 2nd Viscount Halifax, keen to inspire the local community and encourage their spiritual wellbeing.
