The medieval church was on the pilgrim route from Whitby to Durham Cathedral. It has a Norman chancel and horseshoe arch and a Leper's window. It has a well kept churchyard, at the gate of which the Rt Hon Tony Blair Prime Minister announced the death of the Princess Diana.
