In 1648 Baptist & Congregationalists fist met in Wells Cathedral. Their history became a bit hazy around the end of the 17th century, but by 1750 Congregationalists were meeting in a private house in East Wells and by 1787 a Congregational Chapel was built in Grove Lane (Union Street). In 1815 Wells Particular Baptist Church was formed in Grove Lane.

A century ago Wells United Church was formed when two chapels in Union Street, one Baptist and one Congregational merged together to form one United Church. In 1972 the Congregational Church of England and Wales united with the Presbyterian Church of England to form the United Reformed Church.

Wells United Church is now a full part of both the Baptist and United Reformed Churches as a united congregation.
