Like many Welsh churches, St Lawrence's is built within a 'llan', an early Christian enclosure that may date back to the first days of Christianity in Wales.

But the present building and its tall stone tower are from the late 12th or early 13th century.
The interior of the little church is charming, with a low chancel arch adding to the ancient look and feel.
There are three holy wells in the churchyard, and they still attract pilgrims. The waters are said to have medicinal and healing properties.
An old Easter custom called 'Throwing Away Christ's Nails' has been revived here in recent years. From Palm Sunday members of the congregation carry a nail in their pockets, and after the Easter Day service they take the nails to the holy wells and throw them in. An older name for the custom was 'Throwing Lent Away'.
